About Us & Our Service

Hi - we are located on a little farm south of the town of Mancos Colorado.
Known as the Gateway to Mesa Verde National Park,
this is a lovely area with tons of history of the southwest. We use this
site for our retail buyers and to announce various news about our
business.

My Background
As
I was receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art
from California State University at Fullerton (1976), I was well into my career
as an artist. Since I was twelve, I had been running my own various art
businesses. I grew up in a commercial artist studio where my mother was a
successful painter. In 1974 I opened a large pottery studio with the late Eric
McKnight. We co-owned and operated "A Stone’s Throw" pottery until I
sold my share to my apprentice and moved from the LA area to Lake Tahoe. During
my time as a potter in southern California I did fine art shows from Santa
Barbara to San Diego. I also had a successful wholesale line, which included
accounts such as Magic Mountain and Knott’s Berry Farm. The Hollywood crowd
took interest in my work at Brentwood and now many of my pieces are found in
collections of notable actors.
Once
in Lake Tahoe I continued part time painting and
carving. Traditional Native American pipes and antler with bone knives became my
new passion. I took time at my second career in the casino industry from 1978 to
2006 all along making art in one form or another. I cannot live without creating
something on a regular basis. In 1994 my career brought me to Colorado where I
lived in Evergreen and continued in the casino industry. I also continued with
my art work, but changed my direction by using glass.
In
1999 "Lalu’s Stained Glass" was
developed and slowly became my full time occupation. I started a successful
wholesale business where I find now that I am represented in over forty states
and 75+ galleries and other outlets. The beginning of Big Hand Designs Studio in
the spring of 2011, I will be introducing a line of fused glass as well as
jewelry. Once retiring from "gaming" I relocated my home and studio to
Mancos Colorado where I continue working in glass with my wife Laura.
My Work
I
love working in dimensions and like to layer my
pieces. Movement is important me. Many of my standard wholesale line pieces are
static and it is always a relief to get a commission or order where uniqueness
gives me the freedom to do as I please.
I
am greatly influenced by photographs from the Hubbell
Telescope. The color, depth and movement of the Nebulas and other objects found
in the cosmos drive many of my pieces. Staying unique and thinking outside the
box is satisfying while using glass. Many of my works have a childlike feel and
much of it is the influence from growing up in the 1950’s and ‘60s with
Sputnik.
Thank you so much for
visiting our site! - Peace - Jay & Laura "Lalu"
